Hi.

Welcome to schoolnest. This is a documentary of our home education journey - starting at the very beginning. A very good place to start.

Soft & Soothing Lavender Playdough

Soft & Soothing Lavender Playdough

This playdough is for when you need some soothing.

We all know and love the benefits of playdough. The fine motor skills, imaginative and creative play with open-ended materials, making sculptures and playing chef and rolling and squishing and cutting. But there's something extra soothing about this dough. It is so soft! It isn't sticky, or crumbly, or stinky. Instead, it's smooth and silky and soothing.

After two hard weeks of bad colds, we all needed something fun but calming so I decided to do a quick google search for a playdough recipe, as one does. I came upon Teaching Mama and her Super Soft Playdough Recipe but I didn't have her main ingredients on hand, only the alternative ingredients. Close enough! So I made the alternate recipe and put my own twist on it with a hint of purple food coloring and a few drops of lavender essential oil. The lavender sprigs were pulled from our garden so they could use them with the dough! They made lavender cookies and lavender pies and lavender pizzas galore.

For the full recipe and step-by-step directions with photos, head over to Teaching Mama's Super Soft Playdough Recipe. What follows is her recipe using her alternate ingredients, plus soothing lavender oil and a hint of purple food coloring so pretty that even mama won't be able to resist playing for a bit.

Soft & Soothing Lavender Playdough

Ingredients:

3/4 cup white flour

1/4 cup corn starch

1/4 cup salt

2 teaspoons cream of tartar

1 tablespoon vegetable oil

3/4 cup water

5-10 drops lavender essential oil

just a hint of purple food coloring

sprigs of lavender or dried lavender buds to use in open ended play with the dough

The playdough kept quite well in a sealed container for about a week. It might last much longer, but by then it had been played with so much that it was time for a fresh batch. I'm already dreaming up what subtle natural scent we want to make next!

Don't forget to save the recipe and instructions so you've got a go-to activity the next time you need to get out of a rut, drop everything, and play.
